This Online
Digital Migration Story project is part of the Collaborative Online
International Learning program (COIL) initiative between Florida International
University (FIU) and the Lebanese Center for Migration and Diaspora Studies
(LERC) of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Notre Dame
University-Louaize (NDU) in Lebanon. It serves as a virtual exhibit for the art
collection on the Phoenicians painted by Simon Awad known as Amir Ibn Taufic—a
Chilian of Lebanese descent. (Vallenar, Atacama-21/5/1944)
Collaboratively, our
two students Estefania Urdaneta and Layal Beyhum researched
Awad’s story to illustrate the hybrid identity of migrants. They traced his
family migration story from Lebanon to Chile and explored its
influence on Simon Awad’s interweaving
identity and socio-cultural memory of the motherland through painting the
transnational history of the Phoenician .
The biographical
interviews conducted with Simon Awad complemented the Phoenician Art
Collection, which Awad painted between February and May of 2017 and bequeathed
to LERC, exploring his interpretation of the Phoenician transnational history
through the art lens.
This collaborative
project transcends the Spatio-temporal boundaries. The U.S., Lebanon,
Chile, and Paraguay, where Simon Awad is currently residing, this story and
exhibition is a journey of learning through time and space, full of
cultural appreciation, and respect to diversity.
